The paintings of Johann Baptist Kirner (1806–1866) have so much life in them that one literally seems to hear the laughter of children at play, the weeping of the shepherd and the clink of glasses.

They tell of everyday life in the Black Forest and in Italy. His caricatures show artist colleagues in Munich, Karlsruhe and Rome. This is the first comprehensive work exhibition of the once celebrated Baden court painter from Furtwangen whose undeservedly fell into oblivion.

It mostly takes place completely hidden from view: the creative process, from the first sketched idea via detailed studies to the final elaborately composed artwork. But the Haus der Graphischen Sammlung now allows us to take an unusual glimpse into the work process of virtuosic illustrator Johann Baptist Kirner.

Pencil, chalk, watercolour brush or quill – the artist was skilful in his use of different techniques. A generous family-owned donation supplements the cabinet exhibition.

Eye to eye with the largest poisonous snake in the world, the king cobra, or the most venomous, the inland taipan - this exhibition makes it possible!

Scorpions, tarantulas, black widows, nature has equipped them all with a super weapon: venom! They have been using it for millions of years to protect themselves from enemies or to catch prey themselves. But how dangerous are rattlesnakes and the like for us humans? The name of the poison dart frog already advises caution, but should we also beware of velvet grasshoppers or giant centipedes?

On their expedition through the museum, curious visitors observe the living animals in their terrariums up close. They explore how differently the poisons work and how medicine makes use of them.
