Freiburg Botanical Garden

The first botanical garden at the University of Freiburg was laid out as a teaching garden by the medical faculty as early as 1620, making it one of the first botanical gardens in Germany. Numerous famous botanists among the directors made it well known. After several relocations, today’s botanical garden was laid out in 1912. It has the evolution of plants as a continuous central theme and consists of the habitats of alpine vegetation, dunes, heather, swamp, bogs and water. Even today, research, learning and teaching is carried out in the botanical garden, and it is open to the public (free entry).

The outdoor area invites you to take a long walk with lots of information – native and medicinal plants can be found here as well as tropical and exotic species.
But even in rainy weather, the four thematically divided greenhouses offer young and old visitors exciting things to discover from the field of botany!
Numerous events and regular tours even offer those who are advanced in the subject matter new and exciting things to discover at any time!

Getting there:
Take tram line 2 or 4 to the Botanischer Garten stop, then another 5 minutes on foot.
Due to the lack of parking facilities, we advise against arriving by car.
