Dear guests and friends of the Oberkirch,

after the Winter/Spring-Edition of our magazine was finished, no one was aware of what was about to happen to all of us from March 2020 onwards – the infamous ‘c-word’ was still mostly unknown.

Originally we had planned on giving you our usual overview of the summer festival season that graces our region at this time of the year, as well as a preview of our regional wine festivals. Alas, both will not take place in the usual manner in 2020, but the Christmas markets will be the first type of event that we usually focus on in our magazine that will take place, according to what we know as of today. According to the Freiburg local council that we will not have to expect a cancellation of the Christmas market this year.

But even before the Christmas season and without music and wine festivals, Freiburg and the region have a lot to offer. On bike (for example with our new ‘Discover Freiburg by Bicycle’ offer), with the WelcomeCard from our local public transport network and the «Schauinslandbahn» cable car, you can discover our region to your heart’s content and enjoy easy access to all of this due to our central location.

Meanwhile, many things have happened in the Oberkirch. A lot has been digitized, inevitably this issue of our magazine as well, since we are asked not to offer physical brochures and magazines, according to the hygiene guidelines of our federal association. Also, in line wit these guidelines, we had to introduce a lot of measures in our daily operations in order to e able to welcome you in our hotel and restaurant and still be able to avoid an infection as far as we can.

We have published some behind the scenes content on our website (in German) during the corona crisis, concerning how our young trainees have been learning for their future work life, our in-house laundry and that we have received an award as a top company for trainees. You will find the next instalment of this look behind the scenes in this magazine under the heading «Oberkirch Buzz».

We wish you a joyful summer and early autumn and we are looking forward to welcoming you again soon in our hotel and restaurant.

Yours sincerely, Doris Hunn and the entire Oberkirch staff.
